1. Talk about communicationWhat it is -- brainstorm (on white board) all the different ways people communicate -- can include body language, blinking, smoke signals, whatever... pictures with words wherever possible for the emerging readers. Depending on what we get, we could circle the things that are technology oriented or circle with another color the ones that changed while their grandparents were alive.
2. Any good stories from grandparentsTalk about party lines -- old style, not new style that shows up on google these days. Maybe Moms could role play different houses and have a "ringer" -- maybe someone's phone -- and we all race to pick up our own phone to see who it is... and some people listen in when they realize it's not for them. We can also try to make a call but someone's on the line already...
3. Videos-- I think there are 2 or 3 good ones -- I need to go back to the wiki to narrow down which ones
DEFINITELY -- just because I like the Martians! SESAME STREET: When the martians discovered a telephone... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTc3PsW5ghQ
4. Focus on phonesHave them create their own timeline for phones on cardstock strips -- work in pairs. Have the following photos cut apart and mixed up...
Add one set of the photos to the big timeline (each child puts one phone up on the timeline. Plus anything else they want to add. Look inside an old phone.... Then see inside a phone... (if more than 1, then they can take apart otherwise we'll do it as a group) 5. Team building, intro to programming, LEGO / Communication:
Back to back build -- start with 15-20 pieces -- 2 bags of identical pieces for each group (each pair of bags can vary -- could have simple ones and more difficult for those who want to do harder options). Tray or paper plate on each person's lap with the LEGO's. One person builds, the other one tries to build the same thing while listening to the first person. Start with 2 or 3 pieces and work up, I think -- will need Mom help... Demetrius and Kai probably need adults with them -- maybe Mark as well?
SNACK -- outside if possible...
6. Free build -- build something for LEGO's that has to do with a phone -- or a telegraph....? or communication...

NEXT WEEK's Topic: Transportation
RESOURCES
Here's a great slide show (16 slides) of phones and how they changed in looks -- this is what the handout is based on...

A cool story about the princess phone and how amazing it was to think of extension lines -- by 1960's, people had gained weight because of extensions in their house -- some good quotes:
